Gun Control: Lessons from the Past

I was reminded again this week of Barack Obama’s “never let a crisis go to waste” philosophy with how he responded to the horrible tragedy in Oregon. It has again brought to the forefront  a nasty little trite saying to the lips of liberals everywhere, “Common Sense gun reform”. What is that exactly? I must admit that I am a bit frightened by allowing those who brought us Planned Parenthood, Man-made climate change and transgenderism as the “norm” to now decide  what common sense is. The download (4) Gun Control: Lessons from the Past download 4real kicker here though is that no one that I have spoken with, or even listened to on radio or on podcasts has been able to describe what specific common sense gun reform needs to take place to eliminate tragedies like the one that struck this week from occurring. For these reasons I thought it might be appropriate to see what has happened in other countries (many of the whom the left refer to regularly as success stories of gun control reform) since attempting to enact new gun control legislation.

Australia

Australia’s name is invoked as the “be all end all of gun reform” by many in Australia and really, around the world because of their reaction and legislation that took place after the Port Arthur mass shooting that ended in 35 being killed in 1996. What is rarely (if ever) mentioned by the mainstream media is the fact that the reforms that have been “heralded” by many, such as the massive Gun Control: Lessons from the Past images 11gun buy back that took place, were mandatory. That’s right…nearly 1,000,000 guns were taken off the street, but against people’s will. Check out this excerpt by Charles Cooke of the National Review:

“You simply cannot praise Australia’s gun-laws without praising the country’s mass confiscation program. That is Australia’s law. When the Left says that we should respond to shootings as Australia did, they don’t mean that we should institute background checks on private sales; they mean that they we should ban and confiscate guns. No amount of wooly words can change this. Again, one doesn’t bring up countries that have confiscated firearms as a shining example unless one wishes to push the conversation toward confiscation.”

So when you hear anyone on the left mention Australia as a “model” to be “followed”, what they are showing you is there true colors when it comes to their beliefs about the 2nd amendment. It is awe inspiring to me how many of what are supposed to be the “smartest among us” don’t see the fallacy of the age old “gun restrictions save lives” argument. It is amazing how people don’t understand that making something illegal or harder to get only affects those who care about following laws. Criminals will get guns despite any laws that infringe upon the 2nd amendment. What “common sense gun legislation” really means is we need to take guns away from law abiding citizens and leave them in a world where only the government and the criminal element have access to firearms. I for one am most uncomfortable with either of these two groups being the only ones with guns.

UK

It is strange to me that a country like ours that fought so hard to get away from England, now strives to be so much like them in an area that has been a complete and miserable failure. Beginning right after World War I and continuing through the 1990’s, Britain has passed a series of gun control legislation that has in essence ended the personal right of owning a firearm. Well at least they are safer though, right? No, not right. According to an article by Awr Hawkins at breitbart.com;

“And what has been the outcome of passing more laws in Britain to remedy the fact that other laws were ignored or broken? It has not been good.

In 2009, twelve years after the Firearms Act of 1997 was passed, Daily Mail Online reported that Britain was “the most violent country in Europe.” They also reported that Britain’s home figures showed “the UK [had] a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and South Africa.”

South Africa. Let that sink in. In fact, according to the Conservatives EU Commission UN numbers, the UK is #1 in violent crimes with 1,158,597 violent crimes at a rate of 2034 per 100,000 citizens. But…but…guns are pretty much completely illegal? How could this be? Well, knives are not illegal. Oh, and do you remember how we talked about criminals not really caring about laws? Yeah, well, that is seen pretty clearly here as guns have not disappeared from the community, just from the law abiding citizens. It is a complete travesty that those who, at this point, don’t know any better, listen to our Divider & Chief  bold face lie to them about pro-second amendment people being dangerous liars. There are dangerous liars among us in the USA, but they are of the progressive liberal variety. They will says and do anything to get their agenda passed even if it means doing a wrong to get there. You see, most liberals only care about the end result, not the means used to get there. Case in point, Barack Hussein Obama.

There are other examples that we can look at where gun controls have turned into gun confiscation and then shortly thereafter, into genocidal dictatorships (see also Hitler), but the fact remains that our four fathers saw into the future at what man potentially has the ability to become, and what could happen should a nation be left helpless and unable to defend themselves. They had a pretty recent experience to go off of with the monarchy and all the evil it contained in England, and they wanted to make sure that should evil ever take root in the leadership of the United States that the people could not only defend themselves against tyrants, but, as Jefferson said, they could, “Refresh the tree of liberty from time to time with the blood of tyrants”.

No one wants to see violence in our nation. No one that is sane wants to see mass shootings in our country and I hope and pray that the one in Oregon this week is the last. The unfortunate truth however is that as long as our second amendment rights are infringed upon and things like “gun free” zones continue to be enforced, sick and evil men and women will continue to use guns and other weapons to inflict harm upon innocent people. This goes back to the fact that it isn’t a gun problem, it is a heart problem that we have in our nation, and a heart problem isn’t fixed by growth in government control.
